Continuous Glucose Monitors

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) have become increasingly more popular in recent years and are a viable tool to better control diabetes and prevent dangerous highs and lows.

What is a Continuous Glucose Monitor (CGM)?

Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are small devices worn on the body that monitor glucose levels through interstitial fluid (fluid between the cells). Some will give point-in-time glucose levels, while others will give continuous values by taking a reading every 5 minutes. CGMS can be used alone or in connection with insulin pumps and smart pens.

CGMs replace multiple finger pricks per day with a simple swipe of a smartphone or a glance at a smartphone or smartwatch app.  Patients get a better picture of where their blood sugar is trending and can help make decisions to prevent highs and dangerous lows.

There is research showing better control of your diabetes just by using a CGM and getting more information about how your activity, lifestyle, and nutrition affect your blood sugar.

You can also use these devices to reveal how your blood sugars change over a few hours, days, or weeks. Seeing your glucose levels in real-time can help you make more informed decisions throughout the day about how to balance your food, physical activity, and medicine.
